Summers County

Summers County is located in south-eastern West Virginia. The population in 2010 was 13,927 and the county seat is Hinton.  Hinton was once home to a large C&O rail yard with roundhouse and employed over 500 workers.  From the late 1800s through the 1960s, coal was a major industry and thousands of workers were employed by the mines and railroads.  With the decline of coal and rail traffic, tourism and recreation became more important, especially after Bluestone Lake was created with the Bluestone Dam, and with the creation of Pipestem State Park.  It is home to Federal Prison Camp, Alderson, whos notable inmates included singer Billie Holiday, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, and Martha Stewart.

Hinton is the only large city in Summers County, with several small communities located throughout the county.
